When Craig and I moved to the Gold Coast we had the initial goal of joining a local gym, however once we got here we fell in love with our local running routes and hikes and decided we'd both enjoy movement and exercise more if we were outside and trying the fun activities our area had to offer.
Often people decide to not join a gym due to financial or personal reasons, but this in no reason for inactivity. Here are some of the ways we keep active and healthy without a gym.
Technology has enabled an awesome array of online classes being made available for people to work out from home. I love doing this, my favourite sources are Blogilates, on youtube and Yoogaia. Yoogaia has such a wide range of yoga classes, both live and recorded, and there is the possibility of feedback from a live instructor who can view your workout via your webcam. So it can be just like a regular yoga studio class.
I love hiking, it enables me to enjoy the beauty of nature and the excitement of exploration while getting a good workout and getting up a sweat. We try to fit in 2 good hikes every week and I always take a camera along for photos.
Community Classes You don't need to join a gym or yoga studio to enjoy the availability of great fitness classes. A quick google search for classes in your area will hopefully come up with a long list of options, like pilates, yoga and boot camps. This is also a great way to meet people, and make new friends.
Home Circuits with friends
Setting up home circuits to playfully compete with loved ones is a great way to get a HIIT workout, and if you don’t have weights you can always look up calisthenics exercises and body weight alternatives. I find Pinterest is always a great source of workouts that can be used for home circuits.
Its summer in the southern hemisphere right now so getting a cool down and some movement in one go is an excellent way to pass the time. Just head to a lake, river, the sea or a pool and enjoy!
Rock climbing is a enjoyable way to get strength and cardio into your day while on a date or hanging out with friends. I also like running confidence courses and tree top courses, because I've never had a problem with heights and if you are not a heights person, it’s a great way to conquer your fears.
So those are the top ways we like to keep active without using a gym. How do you keep fit? What are your favourite activities, comment below or on the Tea and Sage Facebook page.
