It's amazing how simple and minimal changes around your home can lead to an improved quality of life. Clean, bright spaces and delicious smells always brighten my mood and help make home feel like my little retreat from the world. I'm always trying to actively improve our space and make it more aligned with what brings us joy. Living well doesn't mean forking out an arm and a leg. Here are just some of the simple ways I make my world a brighter place while still remaining mindful and intentional in my spending practices.
Soap and bath bombs in your drawers
I love fresh and delicious smelling clothes and there's nothing like opening a drawer to the smell of springtime. I keep bath bombs and soaps in their paper bags and leave them in my lingerie and t-shirt drawers so my clothing always smells sweet and fresh. I'm currently obsessed with lush bath bombs so my all my clothes smell utterly decadent.
Burn essential oils
Creating blends of essential oils and burning them around the house can be so much fun, and is a nice ritual to add to your day. You can get amazing aromatherapy burning and diffusing oils from discount stores and markets at a low price and it makes a world of a difference in the home. Aromatherapy can be a means of transporting you to a fresh citrus-y kitchen or help you create your own day spa at home. My current favourite blend is patchouli, peppermint, lemongrass and rose geranium.
Recycle jars and bottles for drinking and decor
I love the eclectic look of having mismatched jars, vases and glasses. I recycle them from pickle and condiment containers. They add a sort of higgelty piggelty grace to our house and add a blend of modern and cottage-y perfect for the modern abode.
Wildflowers and foliage
I used to buy fresh flowers weekly but since we've been incorporating mindfulness into our spending and being more intentional in our purchases I've been loving foraging greenery and growing flowers in my garden. It's so fun to collect wildflowers and eucalyptus from the outdoors. I also have pots of pansies and daisies on my porch to liven up the kitchen with a posy when I feel like a little breath of colour.
Place cultivated cuttings and seedlings in bedrooms and bathrooms
Plants aren't just for living rooms. I take cuttings and seedlings from my garden and put them in big preserving jars and bottles. They add restfulness to a room and its a fun opportunity to see a plant grow.
Keep living spaces de-cluttered
Keeping spaces de-cluttered makes the world of a difference. Storing things and getting rid of what you don't like ensures you are waking up to a house that only displays the things you love. We keep our entryway clear by having pine crates for umbrellas and shoes. We also have baskets in shelving to hide our cables and not-so-pretty belongings. This keeps everything as open and restful as possible.
Add motivational and uplifting quotes to your toilet walls
I'm reaching a stage where I am really enjoying collecting inspirational quotes but there's no point leaving them on my Pinterestboard to never be looked at again. Instead, try printing them out or handwriting them and hanging them in the bathroom to enjoy day to day, using them as my little mantras.
